This NHS Connecting for Health programme is being implemented to provide patients with more timely and convenient care, and increase the efficiency, effectiveness and job satisfaction of NHS staff. It will connect over 30,000 GPs in England to almost 300 hospitals and give patients access to their personal health and care information, transforming the way the NHS works.

There is a variety of systems available to deliver this programme, and it will require careful consideration by those tasked with making the decisions within NHS Trusts to ensure that the choice they make is right, not just for the present but to take the NHS forward into a new electronic era.  The enormity of the task and budgetary considerations can often protract those vital decisions.
